These are 10 of my favourite shots on this webpage (they may change from day to day... but this be them as of today)

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8763352: Barns of Ontario        slide show (94)
This is an attempt to create a bit of a photographic record of the barns that add so much to the character of Southern Ontario. Because of the high cost to repair them, they are being allowed to fall into severe disrepair and eventual decay.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 9396444: Magic Light Farm Barns Two        slide show (54)
A continuation of the previous gallery. This gallery contains barns from all over Canada and upstate New York.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8986623: Chukkar - Brighton ON Chukkars, Grouse, Pheasant, Quail, ...        slide show (9)
This is a bit of a catchall category

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 9688248: Fiery-Billed Aracari - Costa Rica Costa Rica - Birds, snaps (and some Insects)        slide show (72)
This is a compilation of a trip to Costa Rica that Helga and I took in January of 2010. It is a winnowing of about 5,000 photos that try to show as many species as possible that we photographed in the 6 days we were active. I would like to thank Clive Goodwin for his invaluable help in identifying some of the trickier species. Any errors, are of course my own.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 9968078: Where am I going? Float-your-Fanny-Down-The-Ganny        slide show (13)
This is a yearly event each spring, in the Town of Port Hope, Ontario in which there is a race down the Ganaraska river in kyaks and canoes (always the fastest) and in very inventive watercraft (always the funniest). Large crowds line the shores and a general air of festivity prevails. This year (2010) the weather was particularly warm (23 degreess C) and and there was an even larger turnout than usual.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8743640: Childhood Foxes        slide show (7)
Living on Chub Point on the shores of Lake Ontario, we've had the good fortune of being able to study a fox family that lives along the shorebanks outside our home. These are some of the photos taken over a 3 year period

This gallery consists of a variety of photos, landscape and people, to give a taste of what I encountered in my trip to Guatemala in the spring of 2009

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8865117: Caspian Tern spotting fish Gulls and Terns        slide show (29)
I became interested in birding as a means to identify the pictures that I was taking. Gulls have presented many identification problems for me over the years, as some gulls take 3 years and others, 4 years, to come into their final adult plummage, with multiple variations taking place each spring and fall. I have a particular fondness for Terns, the high divers of the bird world (Secretly I think that terns can outfly a gull any day)

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 9688278: Crowned Woodnymph Hummingbird - Costa Rica Hummingbirds        slide show (13)
Other than the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds taken in my backyard on Chub Point in Grafton, Ont, the rest were taken in the mountains of south eastern Arizona at private homes with feeders or Costa Rica. Hummingbird colouration of their heads and necks is primarily determined by the angle at which light strikes them... examine the 2 shots of the magnificent hummingbird in the gallery. In one the head looks black with some green, in the other you can see the purple and green colouration.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8773223: Chub Point pre-dawn June Landscapes        slide show (56)
A brief selection of some of my favourite Landscapes

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 9830765: Wheel and leaves Miscellaneous        slide show (14)
There are some photos that don't easily fit into specific categories and are, of necessity, relegated to the catch-all label of "Miscellaneous"

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8848891: Nets and view of Harbour Mouth at Peggy's Cove PEI, Peggy's Cove and Perce, Quebec        slide show (20)
These pictures were the outcome of a recent driving vacation that Helga and I took. We travelled up the north shore of the Gaspe peninsula, through New Brunswick, over to PEI and on to Nova Scotia. We concentrated most of our photography on places in the Gaspe Peninsula, PEI and Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8741000: Curtis - Camp Borden People        slide show (21)
This is a mixture of people going about their business, semi-formal portraits etc.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 9515707: Detail of women carrying their Anda Semana Santa in Guatemala        slide show (26)
This is a short photo essay on a trip I made to Guatemala at Easter in 2009. "The processions in Guatemala were brought over there by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. The processions consist of floats or Andas that carry a religious image of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Most of these images were made during the Spanish occupation and can date back to the end of 16th century. The processions are an Andalusian tradition.
The main inspiration for the carriers -Cucuruchos for men - to carry such a heavy Anda is penance. Some Andas can weigh up to 7,000 pounds.
Another form of penance is for the people who made the carpets or Alfombras. The families and friends that create an original design of an Alfombra can spend a lot of money. Alfombras can be very laborious and time consuming only to be destroyed when the procession passes over them. Such ephemeral art is to show love and respect for their religious beliefs".
-Thanks to Rene Calederon for the explanation

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8726548: Chickadee - Photographed in Algonquin Park Songbirds        slide show (113)
Technically songbirds fall into the passerine category, but I've stretched the designation to include Flycatchers, Kingbirds, Jays, Kingfishers, Grackles, etc.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8948428: Song Sparrow Sparrows        slide show (18)
I started photographing these LBJ's (little brown jobs) because I was having so much difficulty in separating them in the field. They would fly by so quickly and hide, that you just saw a quick flash of brown and they were gone. One picture, of a Harris sparrow, was taken by my wife. Apparently he got lost and showed up in Northumberland county, far far from home.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8990393: White Ibis head detail - Florida Wading Birds        slide show (35)
This is being used as a general category in order not to create too many distinctions in the Galleries. All of these birds are found in and around water, both salt and fresh, but not all of them wade to get their daily bread.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8868458: Magnolia Warbler - Tikal, Guatemala Warblers        slide show (29)
These little jewels are some of the most difficult birds to photograph. They are generally very small and twitchy, seldom holding still for very long. These pictures were taken in a variety of Warbler "Hot Spots"... Point Pelee in May, Prequ'Isle, South Eastern Arizona, Guatemala and my Lake Ontario backyard during migration.

© Sherwood I McLernon PhotoID# 8865131: Red Headed Woodpecker - Grafton ON Woodpeckers        slide show (25)
This is a selection of Woodpeckers taken throughout North America. I still have several on my "must photograph" list, and hopefully I'll be able to add those birds over the next while (Three toed, Ladder Backed, etc.)
